About the Destination

Welcome to Merzouga

A Merzouga campervan trip is one of the most extraordinary travel experiences on earth. Nestled on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes in southeastern Morocco, Merzouga is the gateway to Africa's largest sand sea — a vast, sculpted landscape of copper and amber dunes that rise up to 150 metres above the desert floor.

Unlike any other destination in Morocco, Merzouga rewards the slow traveller. Arriving by motorhome means you can park at the dune's edge as the sky turns violet at dusk, brew coffee at sunrise as the first light ignites the sand, and stay as long as the desert holds you — with no checkout time, no rushed itinerary.

The Sahara desert campervan experience in Morocco begins and ends here. Whether you're a solo adventurer, a couple seeking romance under the Milky Way, or a family chasing the extraordinary, Merzouga delivers something no hotel can replicate: silence, space, and stars.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your Merzouga campervan trip.

The most common Merzouga campervan trip route starts in Marrakech. Drive south via the N9, crossing the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m) to Ouarzazate, then east along the N10 through Agdz and Zagora before reaching Merzouga — approximately 560km / 7–8 hours' drive. Roads are all tarmac and well-suited for motorhomes. We provide a full route guide with every rental.

Yes — camping in Merzouga Morocco is very safe for international tourists. The region is peaceful, locals are welcoming, and official campsites have 24-hour security. Morocco's gendarmerie maintains a visible presence on major desert routes. Petty theft is rare; nonetheless we recommend locking your campervan at night and using designated campsites rather than wild camping alone.

October to April is the ideal window for a Merzouga campervan trip. Daytime temperatures range from 18–26°C, nights drop to 5–12°C (bring a good sleeping bag), and the desert air is crystal clear for stargazing. July and August see temperatures above 45°C — manageable with our air-conditioned campervans but physically demanding outdoors.

Standard motorhomes should not drive onto the soft sand dunes — vehicles can become stuck and damage the desert ecosystem. Our recommended campsites are located at the dune's edge, allowing you to walk directly onto Erg Chebbi within minutes. We offer 4x4 equipped campervans for those wishing to explore deeper desert piste tracks.

Several well-equipped campsites at Merzouga offer 220V electrical hook-ups, water refill stations, clean shower blocks, and toilets. Facilities vary by site — our Sahara desert campervan Morocco guide includes detailed reviews of the top 7 campsites with facility ratings, pricing (typically 80–150 MAD/night), and GPS coordinates.

We recommend a minimum of 2 nights for a meaningful Merzouga campervan trip experience. This gives you one full day for dune activities, a sunset camel trek, a desert night, and a sunrise before departing. Three to four nights allows you to explore the surrounding areas — Khamlia village, the fossil valley, and Rissani souk — at a relaxed pace.

Diesel and petrol are available in Rissani (20km from Merzouga), which has two well-stocked service stations. Merzouga village itself has a small fuel point. We strongly recommend filling your tank fully in Rissani before heading to the dunes. Our campervans have a range of approximately 700km on a full tank.

Absolutely — a Merzouga campervan trip is a spectacular family adventure. Children love the dune climbing, sandboarding, camel rides, and stargazing. Our family-sized motorhomes sleep 4–6 comfortably with bunk configurations, and our shorter camel trek options are designed for younger travellers. We recommend the October–April season for families to avoid heat extremes.
